I’m back ….. I think

Yup, I know it’s been a while. I’m not even going to try to apologise because I know it’s been far too long. I have been trying to decide whether to even continue blogging – this is what happens when you leave things too long.

Anyway, updates. In the gap I became sixty years old, and my mum died. I’m an elderly orphan. She was really unhappy in her final months so I think it was the right time for her – maybe we all get to know when we’ve had enough. Her dying has reminded me that I need to make the most of my time. That sometimes means opting out of doing anything at all and I’m ok with that.

I have been sewing (a very little – mainly repairs),  knitting – always relaxing since it was never a job, and joined an art class. WHAT!?!?!  YES. An art class. After not being allowed to study art at school after I was 13 years old I’m doing it just for me. I’m not convinced I have any talent but that’s not the point.

After spending so much time sewing for others I’m still not entirely enthusiastic about sewing for me but I think that may be coming back. Maybe. I’m reading pattern cutting books again, and I’m shuffling the stash and remembering what I wanted to make with it. I’m still slightly horrified at how much fabric I have so maybe that alone will make me sew again!

So what might I be able to share here? Maybe some of the clothes I’ve had planned but not executed for years. Maybe some of the pattern cutting howlers there are bound to be as I get back to that. Hopefully one or two successes. I used to be good at this and I need to remind myself of that.

Why am I even thinking of blogging again? I have had contact with some fabulous people via blogging over the years and really appreciate that. Some I have even been lucky enough to meet in person. None have disappointed. You are wonderful people out there in blogland. I have been made aware of new patterns, new companies, and new techniques from the blogs I have been reading. If I ever pass on anything useful that would make me happy.

If you’re still reading this ….. thank you. If you’re still following me after not posting for ages …… a bigger thank you. And I promise it won’t be so long until I post again.

  1. Your story sounds similar to mine. I think I know how you feel. Since it has been a year since my Mom passed, I just want to say it does get better. I can’t tell you how long it took as I assume it is different for everyone but I can tell you I am interested in reading and writing blog posts again, sewing for myself and others, and have even ventured out with new sewing related projects. I figure Mom still knows what I’m up to and is still interested, so I continue! Good on you taking an art course! I never had time for extra courses and am looking forward to retirement someday soon when I will have the time for that too! I’m looking forward to seeing what you write, make and even your art! (My sister draws fanatically (haha) and its interesting to see the progression and growth!)

So sorry to hear about your mum Kim.

No matter how long the gaps are I’ll always be happy to receive an update. You don’t even have to show us anything you’ve made. I think the sewing blog community is not what it was, it is quieter. Maybe we made enough clothes to last us a while. Maybe a new generation of bloggers are finding each other somewhere and learning from each other as we did. But I appreciate the sentiment of being happy if one has passed on anything useful.
    Till next time!

Sorry for the passing of your Mother, it’s hard.
It will be nice to read whatever you feel like sharing, when is the right time for you.
Great thing you start a thing you always wanted to do!
    Take care

    • Kim says:

Thank you Judith. I’m enjoying the freedom I’m now able to have, and art is so different to anything else I’ve done recently.

  4. SewRuthieStyle says:

Sorry for your loss. I hope you find the art class freeing and fun.

How good to hear from you again, Kim, and at the same time, how sad to hear about your dear mum. Making sometimes takes a back seat – it has in my life, too, recently, but for other reasons.

Hi Kim, great to see you pop up in my inbox, have followed you for quite a while. So sorry to hear about your loss, I lost my dad 18 months ago and a best friend in November, it does get easier with time and distraction, I have gone back to making patchwork quilts, it’s repetitive and cathartic all in one. Take care, Best wishes Sarah

  7. Welcome back.
I’m sorry for your loss. It’s really hard no matter what the circumstances.

    Hello Kim.
Sorry about your Mum – I see more and more of us ‘elderly orphans’ around me all the time at the moment, the generations are shifting – it’s still hard though.
Only two or three of my ‘real life’ friends are into sewing and/or knitting and crochet so I find the blogging community invaluable for help, advice, encouragement and the exchanging of ideas. Also, the more I commit to ‘paper’ (aka screen) these days the more I remember what I’ve done 🙄
Post if and when you feel like it – as you can see, most of us will be reading. x

Not too many of my local friends sew / knit / whatever so I really value all of you out in blogland. I’m really touched that so many have commented.

  9. So sorry to hear about your mum. Glad you’re taking care of yourself. The art class sounds great.

Fabric stash can be oppressive can’t it, I’m trying to keep mine to one box these days.

Anyway it’s good to hear from you again and I hope you keep blogging!

    • Kim says:

I’m beginning to wonder if having so much to choose from is actually holding me back. A single box seems wise.
Thanks for stopping by Catherine 🙂

I’m sorry about your Mum, but I am pleased to see you blogging again as I missed it. It was so lovely to catch up and I shall let you know if I’m in the area again.

    • Kim says:

It was wonderful to meet you Sue, and it would be great to have another meet up. I really have been lucky to meet some of my blogging friends – and you have all been lovely.

So sorry to hear about your Mum. I get it completely about being ambivalent about blogging, especially when new interests start to take over. After a long hiatus I am sewing again, since I got a new serger. But if it is a choice between blogging and going to the pottery studio, I am in the studio.

    • Kim says:

I’ve just replaced my serger/overlocker too. I’m really looking forward to being enthusiastic about sewing again – but I quite understand about your pottery comment. I’m thrilling to soft pastels at the moment but I’m finding the art classes very challenging and enjoyable.

  12. SewingElle says:

So sorry to hear of your loss of your mum. It’s always hard, no matter what age, level of sickness etc. So good to see you blogging again!

  13. CJ says:

seeeeee!!!! you are well loved and much missed around the blog world! Welcome back! LOVE seeing your creations on here!!!!
Loosing a parent is so hard. I am so sorry for your loss… I lost my dad a few years ago and my heart broke… shattered… nothing could have prepared me… now… all I remember are the laughs and hugs and how he used to call me his babygirl even when I turned 50!
)))hugs((( Kimmie… hopefully we can meet up sometime!

Welcome back! So sorry about your loss, it does take time to come to grips with it as I’ve found out but it will come, so carry on doing what you like and love. As for making things the great beauty is that now you have no deadlines – BIG difference that! Enjoy!

  15. Chris says:

Yay! You are back. Take your time and only do what makes you happy. And above all….remember to laugh.

  16. It’s not quantity of blog posts, it’s quality.

  17. mrsmole says:

Just knowing you are back with us and in a sort of recovery mode and joining an art class shows you are unstoppable! Blogs today are not what they started out to be 10 years ago when everyone was trying to make their mark, sell their homemade patterns and make money from endorsements. With time we all can see the value in slowing down and enjoying the process of creating instead of producing volumes of clothes. You are loved, Kim!

    • Kim says:

Thank you Mrs M! I love the sharing element of blogging – be it information, knowledge, or flat out friendship. It’s proving to be more enduring the some physical as opposed to virtual friends for which I’m very grateful.

  18. Huzzah and welcome back! Summer hols soon, must have another nosh and gossip or three soon as xxx

  19. Anne W says:

I’m sorry for your loss, but welcome back. I’ve noticed blogging is much quieter these days, but I still love it. There’s so much more detail in a blog than you can put in an Instagram post. I hope your heart is healing xx
